This isn't a prototype but one of my surplus file copies. Created in 2000 as a Bad Taste Bears Collector's Club Membership Piece, Seal Clubber is one of my favourite bears because any bad taste is purely in the perception of the viewer. On several occasions when I've been asked to sign this bear, particularly in Orkney, where there are a lot of seals, I've insisted that it isn't bad taste at all. In fact, the bear is taking his friend down to the beach and is going to use the club to knock pebbles as far as possible out to sea so that the seal can go and fetch them. It's their favourite game, honest.
Interestingly, this bear is noticeably early in the evolution of the Bad Taste Bears in that it not only has no fingers, it doesn't even have an opposable thumb. Awkward for picking his nose, surely.
Bearing the initials of William Lowrey, one of the first BTB sculptors and for some reason bearing the number '00' on his bum - no doubt someone knows why. I appreciate there are quite a few of this bear dotted around the world, but just in case there's a collection somewhere that doesn't have one, he'll proudly stand up with his chums.
The figurine is accompanied by a unique signed Certificate of Authenticity confirming it to be from my personal and private file. Both the certificate and the bear carry the official stamp confirming their origin.
