My initial drawing of this figurine shows the turkey still in possession of its head. However, due to an unforeseen hiccup in communication somewhere between me and the sculptor, it was sculpted in this oven-ready guise.
While it could be argued that the place where the neck should be bears a slight resemblance to a certain intimate place (and I don't mean round the back of the school bike sheds), I had to insist that the figurine be reworked to incorporate the turkey's head and neck, just like in my drawing. The resulting turkey resplendent with knobbly neck and pretty little face is the version that everybody knows. Well, not everybody. I'm willing to bet if you asked Prince Charles or Camilla if they'd seen it, there's a fair chance they'd not happened upon such a thing. Anyway, I digress.
So, that would make this first generation resin cast from the original sculpt something of a rarity and we all know how everybody loves rarities, don't we?
For comparison, I photographed the figurine with the correct version. Don't go thinking that you get that one too because that has already found a new home and no longer in my possession.
From these images, it's clear that there was more to the remodeling than simply adding the head and neck. The angle of the bird's body had to be adjusted to allow space for the extra material. This in turn altered the centre of gravity of the whole piece, so Bernard needed to be given a counter lean to ensure he didn't fall down because of the head. And we all know about going down for the sake of a little head, don't we? Don't we?
The figurine is accompanied by a unique signed Certificate of Authenticity confirming it to be from my personal and private file. Both the certificate and the bear carry the official stamp confirming their origin.
